Marketing Your MLM Business Online

MLM and most network marketing companies are formed around products which are consumable.  The very nature of the product sales revolves around  the traditions of selling retail goods in stores and markets.  The products need to be talked about, demonstrated, and sometimes sampled, before they are sold.  The technique of marketing in this way are as old as humanity’s first open-air marketplace, where social interaction resulted in direct sales between individuals.

The development of MLM followed the one-to-one sales tradition of direct sales, and refined the concept.  Since its inception, Multi Level Marketing has concentrated on developing more efficient ways of  reaching a receptive audience for its products. One such improvement was the Home Party plan, where a single merchant could demonstrate and introduce products to several people at a time in a private setting.  This avoided the confusion and competition of the public marketplace (think of open-air flea markets, for example).  It also negated the need for the expense of  maintaining a permanent storefront.

It is because of the origins of direct marketing that most MLM companies have avoided the internet as a means of  expanding their business.  The leaders of those companies simply do not know how to operate on the internet.  They often provide their representatives with websites, but consider the sites to be a form of advertising.  The sites are provided in the same way that the company provides approved ad blanks for print advertising.

What is missing in MLM is the recognition that the internet can be used as a MARKETING and prospecting tool, not just an advertising vehicle.  There is a big difference between the two.   Marketing means targeting an audience, reaching them, and engaging them. This is often possible on a large scale online through the effective use of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. Blogs are another way to engage people in a conversation which can lead to relationships and sales.  Although direct advertising is still very effective, ads placed without the benefit of marketing expertise are largely a waste of space and money.

So where does a MLM rep start to learn about marketing?  It is a skill which must be learned. Although there is a plethora of free advice and opinions, online marketing is much too involved to be approached without some sort of expert guidance.

MLM reps who want to know how to market their company on the internet can seldom rely on their upline to provide training in effective techniques.  Until recently there were few alternatives besides self-study and experimentation.  However, with the formation of PrimaryBusinesses.net, marketing and lead generation training is available to help grow any MLM company online.
